ALPINE A $50,000 gift from Heritage Award honoree John Poindexter has provided an early boost to the Museum of the Big Bend’s Complex Capital Campaign.
The museum, located on the Sul Ross State University campus, unveiled a building design for a $10 million Museum Complex and renovations to the historic Museum of the Big Bend during its annual Big Bend Heritage Dinner this past September. Plans include a dedicated gallery space featuring the historic Western Beef cattle paintings by El Paso native son, Tom Lea, along with a temporary gallery space for the museum’s rotating exhibits.
Other features include the Event Space, both interior and exterior, that utilizes the majestic Davis Mountains as its backdrop, and a 2,000 square foot storage area for the museum’s expanding early Texas art and Mexican Folk Art collections.
Poindexter, owner of the Cibolo Creek Ranch, serves on the Museum of the Big Bend Director’s Advisory Council and also the Borderlands Research Institute board of directors at Sul Ross.
“The Museum of the Big Bend is a genuine cultural icon for our region, one which portrays the complexity of our multilingual border environment, our Hispanic, Native American and American settler heritages, and that supports the education of our youth in traditional values,” he said. “It is an honor, and for me nearly a duty, to help sustain this indispensable institution.”
