OPD arrests woman accused of spitting on restaurant employees, throwing feces on jail staff

Odessa police say it began at lunchtime with a woman spitting on Taco Villa employees and ended with her throwing human feces on jail staff.

Police were called at 11:12 a.m. Thursday to the restaurant at 1910 North West County Road, about a customer causing a disturbance inside, assaulting employees and spitting on them. There, police reported finding an intoxicated 45-year-old Joni Gist sitting in front of the cash register.

Officers reported that multiple employees identified her as the woman who assaulted employees and determining that she struck a 79-year-old man with a food tray.

She was arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor public intoxication, but at the jail, police said Gist “intentionally spit on the jail staff and threw human feces on them.” As a result, police reported arresting her on a felony charge of harassing a public servant.

Gist, 5604 Angus Road, was listed Monday as being held at the Ector County Detention Center on a total $15,371 bond.
