Odessa woman suffers critical injuries during collision

An 18-year-old Odessa woman was in critical condition Friday after she reportedly failed to yield the right-of-way to a moving commercial van and was struck as her vehicle crossed busy Eighth Street, police said.
Izria Alvarez was heading north on Hillcrest Avenue in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup when she crossed the often busy thoroughfare during the afternoon rush hour and collided with a 2010 Ford van driven by 40-year-old Pamela Handlon, of Odessa. Handlon was heading east on Eighth Street, Odessa Police Department spokesman Cpl. Steve LeSueur said.
The collision was reported at 4:43 p.m. and caused traffic to slow as police and firefighters were at the scene. Both women were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Handlon suffered minor injuries but Alvarez was sent to Medical Center Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, LeSueur said.
