HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Monahans boys, Andrews girls lead way after first round of District 4-4A tournaments

    MIDLAND After the first round of the District 4-4A championship tournaments, the Andrews girls teams and the Monahans boys team lead the way in their respective events.

    The Monahans boys fired an opening-round 318 Tuesday at the Ranchland Hills Golf Club to sit atop the team leaderboard in the boys district championship tournament. Andrews sits in second after firing a 338. The Monahans secondary team (340) and Andrews secondary team (364) sit third and fourth, respectively.

    In the girls tournament on the same course, Andrews’ main team fired a first-round 349 to pull out in front, with the Lady Mustangs’ secondary team, Andrews Gold, sitting second behind that group after shooting a 364. Monahans (385), Fort Stockton (422) and Greenwood (443) fill out the top five.

    The tournaments will conclude with their second and final rounds April 10 at Hogan Park Golf Course in Midland. The top two finishers in the team standings will advance to the regional tournament, as will the top two medalists not on an advancing team.

    Andrews’ Rachel Huffman tops the individual standings on the girls side after shooting a first-round 83. Lady Mustangs make up the top seven golfers in the medalist standings.

    On the boys side, Joey Kirk of Monahans is out in front after firing a 77. Greenwood’s Colby Karcher is just behind him at 79.
