Each pair competing at the 55th annual Quarter Century Partnership needed to shift its game a bit for Friday’s second round at Odessa Country Club.

Not only did tee times start early in the morning, instead of early afternoon, the duos competed on the venerable Old Course, while Thursday’s first round and today’s final round will take place on the more forgiving Links Course.

That led to higher scores for the middle 18 holes of the event with a trio of Championship-Flight pairs finishing with a 67, the low score for the round in the top tier.

The field is still chasing the Midland duo of Jeremiah Luttrell and Lane Branum (61-71—132), who sit in first place by a stroke heading into the final round.

Last year’s winners, Jay McHugh and Andrew Wyatt (66-67—133), shot one of the low rounds of the day to climb the leaderboard to second place.

“It was tough today,” McHugh said about the second round. “It was a grind, it wasn’t easy. The greens were soft, but we just kind of held on and gave ourselves an opportunity.”

The other two 67’s came from Micah Rodgers and Tad Darland, as well as Beau Davis and Eric Adler.

Rodgers and Darland (67-67—134) sit in third with 10 other pairs within six strokes of Branum and Luttrell.

“We both kind of struggled today,” Luttrell said about his and Branum’s play. “We just didn’t hit it really good. We putted okay; we just had a hard time reading the greens.”

Those chips onto greens added strokes to several teams’ scores Friday. While the Links Course allows golfers to swing away and use power to quickly move through the holes, more finesse is required on the Old Course.

The water hazards and trees scattered around the grounds force teams to dial back a little power and go for accuracy.

Add in the West Texas winds and knowing exactly where the ball will land is a challenge in itself.

That sets up a final round where Luttrell and Branum’s lead is under siege with plenty of talent ready to hoist the trophy.

“I think it’s better to have a little push, to have somebody nipping at your heels as opposed to wide open and your kind of just free swinging … you got a little pressure, that’s when it’s fun,” Branum said. “I think this tournament should be like that.”

Despite shooting 10 strokes higher than they did in the first round, Luttrell added that he and Branum didn’t make any huge mistakes Friday. They didn’t help themselves with only making a few birdies, however, to shoot 1-under.

Both Branum and Luttrell added that playing the Links Course fits into their game better because of the softer greens and straightforward fairways.

They’ll leave the clubhouse with Wyatt and McHugh as the last group to tee off today. The last three champions of the Quarter Century Partnership haven’t come from the final tee time however.

That includes McHugh and Wyatt’s effort from a year ago. Still, McHugh doesn’t want to start the final round from anywhere else.

“We’re glad to be there, I promise you,” he added.

Each of the 26 pairs is within 15 strokes of Luttrell and Branum and with 19 previous Quarter Century Partnership champions in the championship flight, if anyone at the top slips up, this year’s winners could come from back in the field.

“Anybody’s capable of shooting (10-under) any day in this group,” McHugh added.

According to McHugh, Thursday’s opening round featured a few shorter hole distances with plenty of birdie opportunities. Today’s final round will extend the course with teams needing to find consistent power.
