Case to be reviewed by DA, suspect out of custody

A case file on an Odessa man accused of severely hurting an 8-month-old baby girl by dropping her on a concrete floor last year has been received by prosecutors for their review, Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland said Friday.
Jeffrey Stamps’ case was originally received by the DA’s office on Dec. 28 but the report needed more information before it could be submitted to the grand jury for its final decision, Bland said.
Bland declined to say when the report would be sent but said Stamps’ case needed additional information.
Stamps, 26, was arrested in October on a warrant that accused him of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, a first degree felony. Stamps’ arrest stemmed from accusations that he dropped Evoni Brianne Jenkins on a concrete surface that left her with a reported fractured skull and other injuries that required a flight out to a Lubbock hospital.
Stamps, 4327 Turango Ave., was released Nov. 11 from the Ector County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond. A motive behind the crime for which Stamps is accused of committing was not disclosed but the probable cause affidavit read that Stamps was the only adult inside the Turango Avenue home where Evoni and her 4-year-old sister were being watched by Stamps.
Evoni was 4-months-old when she suffered a subdural hematoma, authorities said.
Evoni’s grandmother, Kim McGary, said Evoni now suffers from seizures and can no longer see.
“She can’t see,” McGary said. “She’s been through a lot.”
Evoni, who now is in her grandmother’s custody along with her sibling, needs medical attention and is trying to raise money for medical expenses. A barbecue dinner fundraiser has been set for today in Austin, but is currently looking for a venue in Odessa on March 25.
Raising two granddaughters has taken its toll in recent months, following the repossession of her vehicle Thursday, McGary said.
“It’s been crazy,” said McGary, who reflected a moment and then said,”(Evoni’s) alive and that’s all that matters now.”
