Bicyclist remains in critical condition

A 47-year-old Midland man remained in critical condition Wednesday one day after he was thrown from his bicycle during a collision with a full-size pickup on the south service road of eastbound Highway 191.
Fidel Rubalcaba Sr. continued receiving treatment at Midland Memorial Hospital where he was taken Tuesday following the two-vehicle incident that occurred in Odessa. Odessa Police Department spokesman Cpl. Steve LeSueur said he was legally barred by privacy laws from describing the extent of Rubalcaba’s injuries.
The driver of a GMC Sierra truck, identified as 20-year-old Odessa resident Garrett Ince, was heading east on the service road behind Rubalcaba when Ince collided into the rear of Rubalcaba’s bike. Rubalcaba was thrown and landed on a barbed wire fence in the 8400 block of East Highway 191, LeSueur said.
Ince was not charged for his role in the collision, as the investigation, which is being headed by the OPD, remains active. Details like traveling speed were not disclosed because the investigation is ongoing, LeSueur said.
Tuesday’s collision involving Rubalcaba and Ince was reported shortly before 1:45 p.m. and reportedly clogged traffic for several hours in the area
