Baby showers set nationwide for veterans

The West Texas VA Health Care System will shower 18 women veterans and their families with new baby essentials as part of the first ever Nationwide Baby Shower for Veterans.

The West Texas baby shower is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the VA Permian Basin Community Based Outpatient Clinic, 8050 E. Highway 191. More than 2,400 new veteran parents and new veteran parents-to-be will be recognized at these events across the country, a WTVAHCS news release stated.

“West Texas VA offers comprehensive primary care, prenatal and preconception care, infertility services, maternity care services and the first seven days of newborn care,” said Cynthia Schaffner, women veterans program manager, in a prepared statement. “Many women veterans are unaware of these VA services — we need them to know that this is not their grandfathers’ VA.”

Women make up about 10 percent of the veteran population in the United States and nearly half of the nation’s 2 million women veterans are of reproductive age, the release stated.
