LOOKING BACK for June 3

>> 1962: Odessa High was set to face against Lufkin in the Class 4A state semifinal in Austin. The winner would play in the state championship against Corpus Christi Carroll or Houston Bellaire, while the losers of those matchups would go on to play in a third-place game. Odessa High, riding a 15-game winning streak, was 25-4 on the season, while Lufkin sat at 15-8.

>> 1987: Kermit High saw its baseball season end after a 12-3 loss to Waco La Vega in the Class 3A playoffs. Waco La Vega was in full control of the matchup throughout. Iowa football coach Hayden Fry, quarterback of Odessa High’s 1946 state championship team and Bronchos’ head coach from 1956-58, was set to speak at the first Odessa Football Clinic.

>> 1998: Odessa College pitcher Danny Delmas and Odessa High pitcher Mario Gardea were drafted by the New York Yankees. Both players were leaning toward playing for the Odessa College baseball team the following season instead of taking the professional route. Alpine saw its baseball season end in the playoffs after a 7-3 loss to Iowa Park.

>> 2009: Led by speedster Eleazar Luna, the Andrews baseball team was preparing for a one-game playoff against Brownwood in a Class 3A regional final set to be played at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. The Crane relay team of Cory Black, Isidro Garcia and Justin and Jordan Mendoza were looking to make the most of their chance to compete at the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin. 2007 Odessa High graduate Melinda Bendik signed to continue her track and field at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. after spending the previous two seasons at South Plains College.
