Kermit is the kind of town Jacob Bible is used to.

The Moore, Oklahoma native now gets to call the Winkler County town home as he was approved Wednesday evening by the Kermit ISD School Board as the high school’s new head football coach and athletic director.

“I want to bring them what they deserve, which is an entire athletic program that can compete their tails off,” Bible said about the Yellow Jackets. “We have some athletic teams now that do a great job of that, but I want to bring my work ethic here to spill that over to all the athletic teams.”

Bible was offensive lineman at Westmoore High School (Ok.), and then played left guard at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Out of college, he helped coach at few schools in the Oklahoma City area, including his first head coaching job at Blackwell High School (Ok.)

“I’m pretty well balanced,” Bible said about his coaching style. “I’ve spent more time on the offensive side of the ball, but at my first head coaching job, I became more of as defensive guy and I fell in love with it. If I need to call either side of the ball, I feel really comfortable with it.”

Then he made the jump to Texas high school football at Waco Connally in 2013. Bible then made another move to Willis High school last year.

But when the Kermit job opened in December, Bible jumped at the opportunity.

“It’s about me getting my first head coaching job and athletic director job in the state of Texas, which is why I came here,” Bible said about his move to Texas.

After being named a finalist for the job, Bible visited Kermit and noted how similar it was to the towns he knew in Oklahoma.

“I spent about five years in Western Oklahoma and as far as I know the only thing that’s really different is the oil rigs,” Bible said.

After visiting Kermit where Bible got to meet members of the community, he said the job turned more into serving the Kermit community.

“I was told the people out here are awesome and I saw that,” Bible said. “We are ready to call Kermit home.”

Bible’s family, wife, Ashleigh, and their two children, Mikaela and Cole, also will be making the journey to West Texas.

The Kermit opening started with more than 90 candidates, with Kermit ISD Superintendent Denise Shetter first meeting the candidates once a screening committee had narrowed the field to the final six. Then Shetter and the school board narrowed the field to the final two applicants.

“When you get down to the final two, they both have the skill, but you have to find someone that will fit in West Texas,” Shetter said. “We don’t shy away from hard work.”

Eventually the choice became clear for Shetter in choosing Bible for the position.

“I saw a level of enthusiasm, work ethic and a focus on strength and conditioning that I feel is the foundation of every successful athletic program,” Shetter said. “He has a variety of experience and he was successful in all of them.”

Bible will be moving to the area within a month and had a very clear message Wednesday for the Kermit community.

“No matter the time, no matter the place, the Jackets are going to compete,” he said.
