HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Lady Panthers win 2-6A title

There’s no debate that throughout the entire season, the Permian girls track team has dominated at almost every meet they’ve attended.

The Lady Panthers were crowned District 2-6A champions Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium after compiling 133 points to finish ahead of Midland High.

The bar has been raised to a high standard for the Lady Panthers, and they have excelled at the highest level by meeting their expectations.

“Coming over here, my first year at Permian, it was just teaching them about high expectations. That’s the biggest deal I think,” Permian head coach Hilberto Ochoa said. “It was my 19th year coaching, I’ve just learned that you hold them to high expectations.

“All those little things add up and the end result was a championship. We had a lot of PR’s today. A lot of girls really went out, and we had to change up some things at the last minute.”

Permian qualified for area in 11 events. Two of their relays managed to finish second. It’s safe to say that the relay teams have been a huge contributor to the squad this season.

In addition to helping the relay teams, Tyranique Harris also placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.49.

“It’s a lot carrying the team. It means a lot. I really wasn’t expecting to make it this far, place first,” Harris said. “There’s a lot of competition out here.

“Our relays are basically the base of our team. (That’s) what kind of holds us together other than our field events. We just come out here and we work hard. We keep our bond strong.”

Permian advances to the area meet at Franklin High School in El Paso on April 20.

“I’ve got great coaches. We’ve got a great athletic department at Permian High School,” Ochoa said. “We just kind of put it all together. It’s been great.”

PERMIAN BOYS TAKE SECOND>> Considering all the trials and tribulations that the Permian boys have been through, they managed to take second place at the district meet with 90 points. Amarillo Tascosa won the title by a landslide with 203 points.

Peyton Powell took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.02. He also helped anchor the relay squad to a second place finish in the 4×200.

“Our team works very hard in practice, and they’ve worked for everything that we’re getting here at the track meet,” Powell said. “I’m just glad I can anchor the relay and bring it home for guys who got me in a good place to win it.

“It’s all the about the team. If one man goes down another one’s right there to step it up for them. It just feels good to put points on the board for the team.”

On Day 2, the Panthers qualified both the 4×100 and 4×200 relay squads. They also managed to qualify in the 800-meter run after Oscar Sotelo and Jose Carrasco took third and fourth, respectively.

Josh Garcia took fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:37.37 to qualify for area.

MOVING FORWARD>> Despite finishing seventh overall, the Odessa High boys’ program took a big step forward this season.

At last year’s district meet, the Bronchos scored just six points. This season the squad gave it their very best and scored 45 points.

Odessa High qualified both the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams. In the 300-meter hurdles, Alex Perales won the gold medal after posting a time of 40.08.

“I was really proud of these kids. They’ve worked hard all year,” Odessa High head coach Ryan Jackson said. “It’s a tough district. There are a lot of fast kids.

“For us to get a couple relays out and have an individual district champion in the 300-meter hurdles, I was very pleased. It was a big step for the program. They competed very well today.”

Perales will return to area for his second season. He has his sights set on advancing to regionals and improving his time.

“It honestly means everything, especially helping the 4×4. I’m just trying to get them back to at least area or regionals,” Perales said. “I made it to area last year. To win this year is better, but that’s not my goal.

“My goal is to make it higher and higher every week. We’re just trying to get a better time every week. I love competing in everything I do.”

LADY BRONCHOS BREAK RECORD>> The end result might not have been what the Odessa High Lady Bronchos had hoped for, but they broke a 10-year-old school record in the 4×400-meter relay after they finished second with a time of 4:02.04.

Some highlights for the Lady Bronchos included Hatti Green taking third in the shot put, while Relaya Hernandez finished third in the 100-meter dash and second in the 400.

Freshman Nathalia Escontrias placed third in the 800-meter run.

“My varsity team has really struggled this year,” Odessa High head coach Tracey Borchardt said. “It’s been kind of putting bits and pieces together.

“The outcome that I wanted I did not get, but I will take Hatti going to area in the shot put, Relaya in the 400 (and) the 100, freshman Nathalia Escontrias in the 800, and then of course the mile relay just set a new school record.”

It has been a struggle for the Lady Bronchos all season, but they came out to the district meet and competed against lots of tough competition.

“We went to San Angelo a few weeks ago and really struggled, and so we’re not fast, but we’re getting there, and hopefully we’re getting more confidence in ourselves,” Borchardt said. “I hate to lose. This has been a struggle. Today, I felt that we at least competed in areas that I wanted them to compete.”
