HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Permian Basin athletes get opening matches started at state tournament

COLLEGE STATION Several Permian Basin athletes began play at the UIL Tennis State Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith Intramural Tennis Center at Texas A&M University.

In Class 2A Girls Singles, Jonnah Smith of Wink defeated Kamryn Hrncirik of Seymour, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals, where she will face Landry Laywell of Thorndale.

Smith’s teammates, Sabrina Mercier and TyAnn Slaughter defeated Ana Lima and Taylor Morgan of Centerville, 6-2, 6-0, in a Class 2A Girls Doubles quarterfinal match. They advanced to face Megan Canfield and Sterling Smith of Mason.

In Class 1A Girls Singles, the team of Kailey Dominguez and Carsyn Evans from Buena Vista defeated Raina Short and Zoey Ruiz of Lenorah Grady 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to also advance to the semifinals.

Darryn Sanchez of Fort Stockton wasn’t as fortunate in his Class 4A Boys Singles match, losing to Victor Nguyen of Lamar Fulshear, 6-1, 6-1.
