ABILENE With a chance to possibly knock off the third-best team in Class 6A, the Odessa High Lady Bronchos let one slip away Thursday night at Abilene Christian University’s Wells Field.
The Mansfield High Tigers (28-0-1) defeated Odessa High 10-9 on a walk-off two-run double by Kennedy Hardy in Game 1 of a best-of-3 area round series.
Odessa High trailed 5-0 through two innings before rallying to push across six runs in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead.
Mansfield tacked on five runs in the final two innings to notch the win.
Abigale Rayos led Odessa High, going 3 for 4 with a single, double, triple and an RBI. Skylar Herrera went 2 for 2 with a single and a double.
Abigail Rodriguez finished 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Kyra Jaquez went 2 for 4 with a single, double and an RBI.
Sierra Camacho suffered the loss after throwing 6.1 innings, allowing 14 hits and nine earned runs. Camacho tallied five strikeouts.
Odessa High (23-7-1) was outhit 14-10. Mansfield pitcher Paxton Scheurer threw a complete game with 14 strikeouts.
Game 2 takes place at 6 p.m. Friday. If necessary, Game 3 is at noon Saturday.
