In the closing moments of the compulsory round of the Region III Gymnastics Championships at the Permian Fieldhouse Friday night, teams assessed their scores in a few ways.

Not only is half of the regional meet over, but coaches were comparing scores to see where they fell in the pecking order for the state championships.

Friday’s results meant different things for each of the Permian and Odessa High gymnastics teams, with each Panther and Broncho looking to prove something more in the optional round.

Through one day of competition, the Permian boys (172.400) lead the pack, followed by second-place San Angelo Central (169.600). Odessa High (168.550) rounds out the state-qualifying spots in third. The Bronchos are more than 15 points ahead of fourth-place Abilene Cooper.

Despite leading by almost three points, Permian boys head coach Chris Soto thought his team left some points on the table in the compulsory events.

“I saw a lot of beautiful things happen today and then you see those good things happen, the bad things happen and the ugly really happens,” Soto said. “Overall, I praise my team for being such a great team in the big picture.”

Soto saw several small mistakes, however, that could take the Panthers from state-championship contender to a team trying to get on the podium.

“The boys know the expectations,” Soto said. “We’re not competing against San Angelo; we’re not trying to win regionals. We’re trying to put up a good enough fight to be close to towing the line with teams like Saginaw and Kingwood.

“We just got to be on tomorrow. We got to hit some routines and put up some scores. And they know what they got to do. It’s really just about not giving up any of the routines that we need to count.”

In the girls standings, San Angelo Central (116.600) sits in first place, followed by El Paso Eastwood (113.850) in second. Permian (112.800) is in third place with Odessa High (107.300) in fourth.

The Lady Bronchos’ score is two tenths less than half the minimum mark needed to qualify for the state meet. To head to the state championships in Rockwall at the end of the month, Odessa High also needs to finish in the top three of the standings.

It has a few road blocks in between that long-term goal coming true Saturday, but Lady Bronchos’ head coach Lisa Torrain was still pleased with her team’s effort in compulsory competition.

“I am incredibly positive about how they did today … you want your team to peak at the right time, and they’re doing very well at this time,” Torrain said. “I’m stoked. I told them tomorrow will just be icing on the cake. We made the cake today. If we can get some chocolate icing to put on it tomorrow, I’m going to be happy.”

Permian’s Ryan Dominguez (57.850) is in first place in the boys all-around, followed by Odessa High’s Nicholas Drakus (57.350) in second place.

Permian’s Brandon Dominguez and Odessa High’s Bo Adjani were the only competitors to achieve perfect 10s Friday. Dominguez got his 10 on parallel bars, while Adjani got the perfect mark on pommel horse.

San Angelo Central’s Skyler McCowen (39.100) leads the girls all-around, followed by teammate Mary Grace Thompson (38.900) in second place. Permian’s Bridgett Pando (38.000) was the highest-scoring Lady Panther in sixth place. Odessa High’s Brittney Paredes (37.750) led the Lady Bronchos, sitting in ninth place.

Despite having a clear path to the state meet, Permian girls head coach Brandi Simmons said her team only had an okay day. She wants her team to show more on Saturday with its final home performance of the season.

“It’s different girls on each event today that had their struggle. It wasn’t just one,” Simmons said. “Optionals is really where we feel a little stronger at than compulsories.”

The Odessa High boys are squarely focused on a regional championship. If both San Angelo and Permian falter Saturday and the Bronchos don’t, it could be one of the best days in Odessa High gymnastics history. It’ll still be a tough task with how much quality the Bobcats and Panthers have.

“I’m feeling very good because everybody did their part,” Odessa High boys head coach Tony Gonzalez said. “We didn’t have large breaks or anything and that’s what puts us right behind everybody, which is very doable tomorrow.”

The optional round of the Region III Gymnastics Championships starts at 10 a.m.
