A week after finishing their first two-day meet of the season, the Permian and Odessa High boys and girls gymnastics teams jumped back into competition Saturday at the Harold Green Invitational.

They recovered from the minor injuries and fatigue for a day of optional competition against San Angelo Central, Abilene High, Abilene Cooper and Lubbock High.

Despite the week’s difference, plenty of spots on the podium remained the same.

The Permian boys (154.600) won the event by more than nine points over second-place San Angelo Central (145.500). Odessa High took third (139.500) on its home floor.

Permian senior Brandon Dominguez (51.750) won the boys all-around by a half point over his brother, junior Ryan Dominguez (51.250), who finished in second place. Odessa High’s Nicholas Drakus (50.450) was the highest Bronchos’ competitor in third place.

“I just do what I do every time and go out there and try my best for my teammates and see how it comes out in the end,” Brandon Dominguez said about his performance.

The San Angelo Central girls (106.800) again set the pace in first, with Permian (104.500) closely behind in second. Odessa High (88.700) finished out the podium in third.

Lady Cats’ senior Skyler McCowen (36.900) won the girls all-around for the second straight week with the Permian duo of Joannaly Gonzalez (36.450) and Bridgett Pando (35.150), finishing second and third respectively. Odessa High’s Brittney Paredes (33.500) finished in fifth, the highest among the Lady Bronchos.

“I think we did pretty good overall … they really did shine through and kept a positive attitude,” Paredes said about her team’s performance. “I think it really makes them feel confident and kind of get a good idea of where they’re at optional wise.”

Permian boys head coach Chris Soto said after the meet that his team didn’t have time to change too much from its last meet, but made enough of a difference to comfortably claim the victory.

“We were a little more smooth today,” Soto said about his team. “We went back to the gym after the Martha Mitchell (Invitational) and we worked on the easier things that we were getting so docked off on … the simple things that we were missing. It really showed today.”

Odessa High boys coach Tony Gonzalez said his team was more fatigued than usual in the lead up to the meet with a few of his gymnasts spending more time with the trainer than in the gym practicing.

“That kind of showed up today. They weren’t polished and hitting everything,” Gonzalez said. “We’re going to sit down an evaluate some of things that we did today and we either take out stuff or add things to it.”

Both the Permian and Odessa High girls teams are working to inch closer to San Angelo Central by the time the district meet rolls around in late March.
