HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Cernoch, Serrano qualify for regional tournament

Odessa High’s Hailey Cernoch and Permian’s Emily Serrano qualified for the Region I-6A girls golf tournament as medalists, but weather prevented other local entries from shooting themselves into a berth at the District 2-6A tournament.

Rain forced the cancellation of Tuesday’s second round at Diamondback Golf Course, leaving scores from Monday’s first round to determine regional qualifiers. The top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team earned berths to the regional tournament, scheduled for late April at Arlington’s Tierra Verde Golf Club.

Permian’s No. 1 boys and girls teams each finished third. Both were within three strokes of a regional berth after Monday’s round.

Cernoch shot a 74 to finish third individually, while Serrano carded a 76 to tie for fifth with Midland Lee’s Rebecca Reed. Midland High’s Faith DeLaGarza won the individual title after shooting 66.

Midland High won the team title at 305 with Midland Lee second at 334. Permian was third at 336 and Odessa High was fifth at 351.

In the boys competition, Permian’s Jayden Chavez shot 75 to tie Midland Lee’s Paul Gomez for fifth place and the second medalist spot, which was awarded to Gomez based on a scorecard playoff after rain prevented an on-course playoff. Amarillo Tascosa’s Kirkland King shot 74 to claim the first medalist spot.

San Angelo Central’s Jansen Smith shot 70 to win by a stroke over Wolfforth Frenship’s Jayce Hargrove.

Wolfforth Frenship shot 299 to win the team title with San Angelo Central second at 315. Permian shot 318, while Odessa High tied for fifth at 336. The Bronchos were led by Dominic Herrera with an 81.
