Compass Academy’s Donovan Ramirez took home the gold medal in the triple jump at the Region I-3A Meet Saturday in Abilene to become the first Cougar to advance to the state meet.
Ramirez won the event with a jump of 46 feet, 6.75 inches and will compete in the Class 3A State Track and Field Meet May 6 in Austin.
Ramirez also finished fourth in the 110 meter hurdles and teammate Bo Jarratt was fourth in the 200-meter dash for the Cougars.
Bradley Peralta of Kermit set a new regional meet record of 47.95 seconds in the 400-meter dash to advance to state and Presidio’s Marco Rey won the 3,200 Friday to qualify for Austin.
The Rankin boys track team finished as the Region II-1A champions Saturday in San Angelo with Harrison Fouts (pole vault), Justin Rodriguez (300 hurdles) and a school-record time in boys 800-meter relay to lead the way for the Red Devils. They will compete May 8 in Austin.
Seminole’s Sergio Soto won the regional championship in Class 4A the long jump with a jump of 22 feet, 5.25 inches Saturday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock to be among the qualifiers.
