Since the start of the 2017-18 gymnastics season, this is the date the Permian and Odessa High gymnastics teams have had circled.

There’s no more safety net as 10 teams representing five schools compete in the two-day 2018 District 2-5A Championships. The competition starts at 4:15 p.m. today at the Permian Gymnastics Gymnasium for the compulsory round, followed by the optional round, starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the same venue.

Odessa High and Permian will be joined by San Angelo Central, Abilene High and Abilene Cooper at the meet.

“It’s our big meet just to see what everyone kind of finalized and seeing everyone’s best,” Odessa High senior Bo Adjani said about the district championships. “At this meet, you can’t really change it all the way up to state.”

The Permian boys come into district competition having posted the second-highest average score in the state this year (174 in compulsory, 158 in optional). Members of the team said they’re eight points behind Saginaw for the top spot.

“Every meet, we don’t really care that we’re second in the state right now, we want to be first in the state at that time,” Permian junior Ryan Dominguez said. “I see a lot of maturity in the team this year … I just seeing us being our all-time greatest right now, reaching that max.”

The Permian boys and San Angelo Central girls lifted district trophies last season. While both of those teams would enter as favorites to repeat based on previous scores this season, the Permian girls squad hopes to it has caught up to the two-time defending state runner-up Lady Cats.

“I think we need to hit every routine on beam and bars mostly … it’s not just like one of us, it’s all of us to hit every routine,” Permian senior Joannaly Gonzalez said. “I feel like our team has gotten way closer and last year we were a bit more distant and not as close to like picking each other up and making sure that were happy during the meet.”

To advance to the Region III meet, which will be held April 13 and 14 at the Permian Fieldhouse, all teams have to hit a predetermined score. That standard is reasonable enough where multiple competitors and teams are expected to advance.

“It’s kind of fun. We’re not as fatigued from traveling, so we get to wake up, come straight here and be ready to compete,” Permian’s Darryl Stephens said. “It’s a pretty big advantage, I’m not going to lie … because you practice so much on it, you get a feel for the equipment easier — the bounce of bars, the bounce of the rings — you know how everything works. It’s a nice advantage.”

The Odessa High girls come into the district meet with added depth since last year’s competition. The Lady Bronchos have also improved their team score drastically, sitting fourth in Region III with a combined score of around 199, according to Odessa High head coach Lisa Torrain.

“It feels amazing, we are soaring right now,” Odessa High sophomore Christa Adjani said. “It’s going great.”

“I think we’re pretty set in all of our routines. I feel like we’re as prepared as we possibly could be right now,” Odessa High’s Brittney Paredes said. “If we stay positive and happy and don’t focus on maybe our possible falls or our fails, then overall we’ll do good.”

The Odessa High boys will also look to keep up with its regional rivals. Bo Adjani said the Bronchos’ average compulsory score is around 170 heading into the meet.

“It started out kind of iffy because we lost a lot of guys,” Bo Adjani said about the Bronchos’ season. “This year a majority of our team is freshmen, but the freshmen are really improving.”
