HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Area golfers get off to good start at state tournament

The Monahans boys golf team is currently tied for second place with Canyon following the opening round of the Class 4A State Tournament at Plum Creek Golf Course.

The Loboes shot an opening round 312 with Bond Heflin’s opening round of 74 leading the way. Alonso Ruiz and Konner Iglehart both shot 78 while Matt Madrid opened with an 82. Brandon Swanner shot 89 to round out the scoring for Monahans.

Both Monahans and Canyon trail Region I champion Argyle, who opened with a 296.

Seminole’s Cason Johnson and Fort Stockton’s Alex Williams both got off to solid starts competing as individuals by finishing with rounds of 71 and 73, respectively.

Johnson is currently tied for third place with Jack Burke of Little Cypress-Mauriceville while Williams with three others.

The final round is scheduled to tee off beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
