HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Stout defense helps Permian cruise past San Angelo Central

After allowing a first-quarter touchdown, the Permian defense held firm to push the Panthers District 2-6A winning streak to four games.

By the time the fourth quarter came, Permian was able to wear out the San Angelo Central defense with its run game in a 21-7 win Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

The Bobcats’ defense came up big when it needed to early in the game, forcing a turnover on downs on its own 27 yard line to start its first offensive drive.

It would take 10 plays for the Bobcats to drive the ball 73 yards for the first score of the game, a two-yard rushing touchdown from Tyler Hill.

Permian’s run game was working before the Bobcats got the stop, as the Panthers picked up 57 yards on the ground.

The same thing happened on Permian’s second offensive drive, as the Bobcat defense would recover a fumble to counter a 65-yard run from Rodney Hall on the previous play.

This time, the Panthers defense would hold by forcing a San Angelo Central incomplete pass on fourth and 27 to take over at the Bobcats’ 33.

Permian’s offense took advantage of the stop by embarking on a 15-play, 67-yard drive to take six minutes and 10 seconds off the clock.

Hall was the player to push through for the one-yard rushing score, tying the game up at 7-7 with 5:05 left in the first half.

Tate Terry would hit a 36-yard field goal to put the Panthers ahead, 10-7, with 56 seconds remaining in the second quarter and the Bobcats missed a field goal attempt wide left, giving Permian a 10-7 advantage at the break.

By the time the first half was over, Permian had 231 yards of offense while San Angelo Central recorded 185.

The Panther defense would stand tall throughout the third quarter, forcing Hill to throw seven straight incompletions.

Before the break, Hill had connected with receiver Keevon Rice five times for 150 of his 167 passing yards.

Another Terry field goal early in the third quarter extended the Panthers’ lead to 13-7.

Hall ran in another one-yard score and completed a two-point conversion pass to Lucas Salazar to put Permian up 21-7.

That was all the scoring needed, as the Panthers controlled the clock to secure another victory.
