HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Permian hangs on to edge Wolfforth Frenship

WOLFFORTH The Permian offense delivered a message on the opening drive of the game against Wolfforth Frenship Friday at People’s Bank Stadium.

>> 13 plays.

>> 75 yards.

>> 7 minutes, 14 seconds in time of possession.

The Panthers capped the march with Tristan Johnson’ 1-yard run for the quick lead against the Tigers.

Permian wasn’t finished as its next drive ate up 7:02 on the clock with Tate Terry kicking a 25-yard field goal for the double-digit lead (10-0).

The Panthers’ quickest drive of the first half (4:06) ended when Deonte Bass caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Rodney Hall with 4:29 remaining in the first half.

Permian held the ball for 18:24 of the 24 minutes in the opening half, putting the Frenship defense on its heels on its home turf.

In the end, the early output was just enough as the Tigers rallied in the second half before Permian earned a 17-14 victory in District 2-6A play.

Permian improved to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in district, while Wolfforth Frenship dropped to 4-2, 1-1.

Johnson was the workhorse on the night, carrying the ball 35 times for 159 yards and one touchdown.

The Tigers began cutting into the Panthers’ lead on Andrew Braddock’s 6-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Chad Pharies with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter.

The teams then sat through a 90-minute weather delay early in the fourth quarter, with the Tigers forcing the Panthers to turn the ball over on downs when play resumed.

Wolfforth Frenship pulled within a field goal on Pharies second touchdown toss of the night, this one 15 yards to Landon Hutcheson with 3:09 to play in the game.

The Tigers would have one final chance for the victory, moving the ball inside the Permian 40 in the final minute of the game. But a sack on third down and incomplete pass on fourth down ended the threat.
