HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Bronchos have record-setting performance despite loss

Odessa High went down slinging.

Needing a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Bronchos weren’t able to keep pace with visiting Wolfforth Frenship as the Tigers ran away to a 63-41 victory in District 2-6A play Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

Wolfforth Frenship improved to 4-5 overall, 1-4 in district, while Odessa High capped its season at 3-7, 1-5.

The game marked the return of Bronchos quarterback Diego Cervantes after he missed the past seven quarters after being injured against Midland Legacy two weeks ago.

The layoff didn’t seem to bother him as he finished 39-of-61 passing for 507 yards and four touchdowns, with two interceptions.

The completions, attempts and yards are all single-game records. Cervantes finished the season with 2,562 yards, a single-season mark for the Bronchos.

Cervantes spread the wealth on the night with eight different receivers catch passes.

Terrance Samuel led the way with 11 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns, with Adrian Madrid adding seven catches for 134 yards.

Ivan Carreon had 11 catches for 128 yards, as well, marking the first time that three different receivers have more than 100 yards in the same game.

Running back Dajuan Green finished with 19 carries for 116 yards and two touchdown as the Bronchos finished with 629 yards of offense.

Frenship finished with 659 yards on offense, making the combined total of 1,288 yards, another single-game mark.

Cervantes was a game-time decision and he made the Odessa High coach staff look good with his performance, though there were a few anxious moments when he would get up slowly after a hit.

It was a tough night for defenders as Cervantes and Pharies had plenty of weapons to work with on offense and took full advantage of them.

The teams combined for 77 points and 758 yards of total offense in the first 24 minutes.

Cervantes was 24-of-38 passing for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, with two interceptions and it was the second one that was the most damaging.

With the Bronchos thinking they had a free play because of an offsides penalty, Cervantes went for the big play and saw Frenship’s Kaden Meier pick off the pass at the Tigers’ 20.

No whistle blew to stop the play and Meier took advantage of the Bronchos’ confusion to race up the right sideline for the score.
