The Sanders Division Final of the 2018 North American One-Armed Golfer Association Championship will feature good friends duking it out.

Bart Oliva and Shawn Reimold squared off Thursday night with both golfers looking for their first championship trophy at Odessa Country Club’s Old Course.

Reimold advanced to the final by defeating Bruce Hobbs on Thursday morning 4 and 3, while Oliva took down Musa Pam 3 and 2.

Both golfers also won their quarterfinal matchups Wednesday with matches that ended with at last two holes to go.

“I got my drive on, I got my drive straight and was hitting most of them straight,” Oliva said about his semifinal victory. “I was hitting my irons good and most importantly, I was putting very well. You don’t putt well, that’s where the game is won and lost in match play. I chalk it all up to putting.”

Oliva started playing golf three years ago and his trip to Odessa was for his second appearance in the North American One-Armed Golfer Association Championship.

Last year, he didn’t qualify for the match play rounds.

“It was a good learning experience,” Oliva said. “I took what I remember from last year and put it to work this year and tried not to make the same mistakes.”

Reimold is playing in his third one-armed golfing championship and made the semifinals in match play each of the previous two years. He said this year’s breakthrough round went pretty well.

“Bruce is a great competitor,” Reimold said. “I really had to stay focused and keep my nerves calm and work through it.”

Oliva and Reimold have traveled to tournaments together across the country and will try to bring the best out of each other for a competitive final.

“I can’t wait,” Oliva said. “We’re good friends, despite the fact that he’s an Eagles fan and I’m a Giants fan … he’s just a great guy and I’m looking forward to competing against him and having a good time.

“The chips fall where they may, the best golfer’s going to win.”

Reimold spent the two hours in between semifinal and championship matches clearing his head, getting a quick lunch and hitting a dozen or so balls from the driving range.

“Bart’s a great friend, so it will be a lot of fun playing with him,” Reimold added.

In the Getchell Division, four-time defending champion Jesse Florkowski advanced to his fifth consecutive final with a 6-and-5 victory over Jason Aken. Florkowski faced five-time champion Vince Biser, who advanced past Pat Schroeder with a 3-and-2 win, in the championship match.

In the Fullgraf Division, Jonathan Snyder won his semifinal match against Bill Frey, winning 4 and 2. Snyder competed for the championship against Steven Shipuleski, who advanced 2 and 1 past Carson Novins.

Saturday’s Odessa American will feature a story and the results from all three championship games.
