GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Andrews, Wink fourth, Compass Academy seventh after opening round of state tournament

The Andrews girls golf team will look to make up some ground on its journey to try and capture a 10th straight title after opening the Class 4A State Golf Tournament with a 326 at Plum Creek Golf Club Monday in Kyle.

The Lady Mustangs are 11 strokes behind leader Argyle (315), nine behind Lampasas (317) and seven behind third-place Midlothian Heritage (319). Sarah Strube led Andrews with an opening 80 followed by Brynlee Dyas (81), Jordyn Hall (82) and Peighton Manning and Bailey Ballou, who both shot 83.

Andrews’ Alexza Madrid shot 81 competing as an individual while Kyleigh McGowen opened with an 87. Seminole’s Kendra Elias also shot 85 as the other area golfer competing.

In Class 3A, Compass Academy is in seventh place after opening with a total of 402 at ShadowGlen Golf Club in Manor.

Jordyn Cruz led the Lady Cougars with a 94 while Aubrey Stone shot 97. Sierra Dobbs and Allie Scott shot 103 and 108, respectively to round out the team.

Katie Hart of Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill shot 74 to take a two-shot lead over Pottsboro’s Alli Reily (76) to lead the medalists. Wall (353) leads the team standings over McGregor (382) and Callisburg (387).

The Wink Lady Cats shot 415 and are fourth at the Class 2A State Tournament at The Legends Golf Course in Kingsland. Analia Hernandez had the low round of the day with a 98 followed by Ashlee Blackburn (103), Danni Akers (106) and Emily Valenzuela (108). Martin’s Mill Mia Nixon leads the individual field after opening with a 73.

Normangee (374) leads the team standings followed by Mason (392) and Crawford (408).
