HOUSTON Texas Southern’s Glen Cuillette passed for three touchdowns Saturday night as the Tigers defeated UTPB 26-16 in the season opener for both teams at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The opening kickoff was delayed 2½ hours due to severe weather.
Cuiellette was 19 of 33 passing for 235 yards, connecting with 11 receivers as the Tigers finished with 363 total yards.
The Falcons finished with 297 total yards as quarterback Sam Allen accounted for 140 yards and two touchdowns rushing and passing. Allen was 4 of 11 passing for 84 yards, 64 of which came on a TD pass to Ben Galaviz. Allen added 56 rushing yards with a 2-yard TD run. Both scores came in the fourth quarter as UTPB rallied from a 23-2 deficit.
Marquis Simmons led UTPB on the ground with 79 yards on 10 carries.
John O’Kelley had seven tackles with three sacks and a forced fumble to lead the Falcon defense. Marquee Allison, Quinn Tinley and Chris Hoad each had six tackles. Justin Nichols and Keegan Gray each had an interception and La’Daidreain Glasker recovered a fumble for UTPB.
UTPB went 57 yards, including a 43-yard run by Simmons, on the opening drive before stalling out at Texas Southern’s 8 and the Falcons missed a 25-yard field-goal attempt. The Falcons struggled in the kicking game with another missed field goal from 20 yards, a missed extra point and a 13-yard punt.
Texas Southern’s Bobby Hartzog had a 37-yard run before scoring on a 39-yard pass from Cuiellette with 9:34 left in the first quarter. After the short punt, Cuillette then hit Tren’Davian Dickson for a 15-yard touchdown. UTPB’s only points of the first half came when Nichols blocked the extra point attempt and Diameon Brewer returned it 98 yards to make the score 13-2.
Texas Southern’s Aaron Cuevas made a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half and to put the Tigers up 16-2. After Bryston Cummings scored on a 2-yard reception late in the third quarter and Allen’s rushing TD early in the fourth, Cuevas hit 41-yarder that made it 26-8.
Brad Woodard led Texas Southern with 74 yards rushing on 16 carries. Tariq Buchanan caught four passes for 34 yards, while Chris Long had three receptions for 44 yards and Dickson finished with three catches for 32 yards.
Galaviz led the Falcons’ receivers with three catches for 78 yards. Quarterback Kameron Mathis was 7 of 15 passing for 31 yards.
