MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Buffs’ sharp shooting lifts No. 10 West Texas A&M to win in showdown with No. 8 UTPB

Sharpshooting West Texas A&M knocked down 16 of 36 shots from 3-point range and the Buffs rolled to a 105-86 win over the UTPB men’s basketball team in a top-10 tilt on Tuesday at the First United Bank Center.

West Texas A&M entered the contest ranked 10th in Division II and UTPB entered as No. 8 in the latest NABC poll released earlier Monday, for a battle between teams atop the Lone Star Conference standings.

The Buffs’ big win forces a tie on top of the league standings, as both teams sit 10-2.

West Texas A&M knocked down five of six 3-pointers during a hot stretch late in the first quarter, which helped push a tie score at 19-19 to an 18-point Buffs advantage at 47-29 with three and half minutes left in the first half.

The Buffs led 51-38 at the break.

UTPB’s Daeshon Francis and West Texas A&M’s David Chavlovich tied for a game-high 26 points, in a matchup between the conference’s top two scorers.

But behind him, Chavlovich got help from 37 Buffs bench points, while UTPB’s bench mustered just eight points.

UTPB will look to regroup before taking on Midwestern State on the road Feb. 8.
