The Odessa College baseball team wrapped up a four-game series sweep of Eastern New Mexico’s junior varsity team Saturday at American Legion Field by winning a pair of games 16-3 and 33-3.

The Wranglers (6-7) outscored the Greyhounds 75-7 in the series, ending all four games early by run rule. Odessa College capped the series by sending 22 batters to the plate in a 17-run fourth inning of Saturday’s second game.

Odessa College coach Kurtis Lay said things are slowly coming around for the Wranglers.

“We’ve experienced some struggles in all facets,” Lay said. “The matter is putting them all three together — getting the offense, getting the pitching, getting the defense all on the same weekend. Last weekend, we struggled a little bit offensively. The first weekend, we struggled a little bit on the mound and defensively.

“The guys continue to work hard and, eventually, we’re going to get some of these guys that are a little banged up back in the lineup. Hopefully, that’s going to generate some more offense and we just have to continue to pitch.”

Every Odessa College position player had at least a hit, a run scored and an RBI on Saturday. Mitch Holding was 5 for 9 with eight RBIs. Tresten Kennard and Deylan Moreno (six RBIs apiece) and Chance Medina (five RBIs) each had five hits overall. Robert Morales also drove in six runs. The Wranglers totaled 32 hits with nine doubles and 12 triples and scored at least two runs in every inning in Saturday’s games.

“We’re just trying to put up crooked numbers on the board 24/7, no matter who the competition is,” Medina said. “We’re just trying to stay within ourselves, stay with a good approach, no matter who’s on the mound.”

Starting pitchers Marc Luna and Josh Bedggood recorded the wins for Odessa College. Luna (3-0) went three innings in the opener, allowing a run on one hit and two walks. He struck out two. Bedggood (1-1) struck out six over four innings in the nightcap, giving up two earned runs on two hits.

“We did what we had to do, hit our spots and execute every pitch,” Luna said. “We got out of the game pretty easily, run-ruled the other team. We got support, so that helped us out a lot.”
