PORTALES, N.M. The Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds took both games of Saturday’s Lone Star Conference doubleheader against UTPB, winning 11-5 and 15-8.
UTPB’s Mike Fernandez homered and drove in two runs in the opener, while Tylor Frailey went 2 for 3 with a double for the Falcons. Garlind Webster, Alex DeLaCruz, Endy Villalona and Julian Heredia each had two RBIs for the Greyhounds, who took control with six runs in the second inning.
Eastern’s Enrique Perez (6-3) gave up five runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings for the win. Levi Shandrew, who came on after the Falcons got within 8-5 in the fifth, pitched 2.1 shutout innings for his sixth save. Falcons starter Owen Bessette (2-5) was charged with six runs on three hits and three walks in taking the loss.
In the nightcap, UTPB’s Dalton Drury was 2 for 4 with five RBIs, hitting a grand slam in the third inning, but it wasn’t enough. Villalona and Zach Shank each had a two-run single as the Greyhounds scored eight runs in the first. Webster, who finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs, added a three-run homer in the third.
Keenan Dodd (6-3) worked five innings for the win. Ivan Thomas (1-5) failed to get out of the first inning in taking the loss.
