CANYON The UTPB Falcons open play in the Lone Star Conference baseball tournament at 3 p.m. today at West Texas A&M’s Wilder Park.
The Falcons (9-40) tied Cameron for sixth place in the conference standings at 5-19 and claimed the tournament’s sixth seed on a tiebreaker. UTPB will play third seed Texas A&M-Kingsville (36-13) in the opening game of the single-elimination event. The Javelinas won seven of eight meetings with UTPB this season.
Thursday’s other first-round game matches fourth seed Angelo State (33-17) and fifth seed Eastern New Mexico (23-23) at 7 p.m. Top seed West Texas A&M (38-11) and second seed Tarleton State (33-15) have first-round byes and will meet Thursday’s winners in Friday’s semifinals. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.
