COLLEGE BASEBALL: Melendez earns Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year honor

Ivan Melendez of the University of Texas was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year after recording 29 home runs and a .903 slugging percentage.

Before transferring to Texas, Melendez was a standout as a member of the Odessa College baseball team.

He was a 2018-19 NJCAA Division I All-American Third Team selection as a Wrangler, along with being a first team All-NJCAA Region V and first team All-Conference selection in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

The El Paso native has recorded 87 RBIs this season and is the fourth Longhorn to win the player of the year award, along with Brooks Kieschnick, Scott Bryant and Greg Swindell.

Melendez and the Longhorns will face Air Force at 1 p.m. Friday in the Austin Regional at the 2022 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
