The energy was up and the effort was there, but unfortunately for the Odessa Jackalopes, that didn’t add up to victory Tuesday night.

Tyler Redebach scored on a breakaway at the 9:36 mark of the second period and the visiting Arizona Sundogs made that goal stand up as the winning margin in 3-2 victory over the Jackalopes before a crowd of 1,763 at Ector County Coliseum.

Jay Latulippe and Dominic Leveille scored for the Jackalopes, who drop to 1-2 on the season. Brian Swiniarski, Alex Dunn, Sebasten Thinel and Nathan Ward added assists for the Jackalopes.

Dusty Collins scored twice for Arizona (3-0).

"I thought we played much better in the second and third periods," Jackalopes coach Paul Gillis said. "That’s a good hockey club over there and it took us some time to get use to their speed and when we didn’t get the forecheck going, that gave them a chance to skate through the neutral zone and score a couple of goals in the first period.

"I thought that when we made a couple of adjustment after the first period and were able to slow them down and then we were able to create a lot of chances after that."

After being outshot, 17-11, in the first period, the Jackalopes rebounded to outshoot Arizona 27-11 in the final 40 minutes.

For the second time in three games this season, the Jackalopes started strong, then flattened out in the middle of the first period and the Sundogs took advantage.

With 8:53 gone in the first period, Collins scored the first of his two first-period goals as Arizona drove through the neutral zone. With Jackalopes defenders chasing, but just one stride behind, Chris Greene and Guillaume Rodrigue moved the puck into the Odessa zone, where Collins finished inside the right post past Gorman.

Collins’ second marker of the period also was a transitiion tally as the Sundogs rushed the net and Collins banged home a rebound of Greene’s shot from the left circle.

The Jackalopes cut the lead in half with 3:50 left in the first period when Latulippe netted his first goal of the season on a breakaway.

Dunn started the play by feeding the puck up the left-wing boards to Swiniarski, who then found Latulippe racing alone down the right side.

The Jackalopes’ forward skated through the right circle and then snapped a wrist shot past Sundogs’ goaltender Bill Zaniboni just inside the left post.

After Redenbach pushed the margin back to two goals, Leveille connected on his first goal of the season, tipping a shot from the slot by Thinel just inside the left post with 3:43 left in the second period.
