MIDLAND Chase Calabuig singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning Wednesday and the Midland RockHounds held on for a 2-1 victory against Amarillo in the rubber game of their Texas League series at Security Bank Ballpark.

Midland extended its lead in the South Division to three games by taking two of three in the series.

Jesus Zambrano (2-0) worked three scoreless innings for the win, allowing four hits and striking out one as the RockHounds bullpen did the job on the mound. Trey Cochran-Gill made his first start of the season and gave up a run on two hits over three innings. Seth Martinez struck out four in three scoreless innings.

Amarillo reliever Andres Munoz (0-2) was charged with the loss, giving up a run on two hits over two innings. Amarillo starter Lake Bachar gave up one unearned run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

Amarillo got on the board in the third when Brad Zunica walked and Buddy Reed followed with an RBI double.

Midland tied it in the fourth when Calabuig, who was 2 for 3, led off with a walk, went to third on Bachar’s errant pickoff attempt and scored on Tyler Ramirez’s sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Munoz got two quick outs before Dairon Blanco tripled. Calabuig then fouled off three two-strike pitches before rolling a single through the right side.

Reed went 4 for 4 for Amarillo, finishing a home run shy of the cycle, as Midland pitchers were repeatedly able to escape trouble.

In the third, Reed was thrown out at the plate on Edward Olivas’ grounder to third as Cochran-Gill limited the damage. Reed tripled with one out in the fifth, but Martinez retired the next two batters to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Zambrano worked out of a pair of jams to close it out. In the seventh, singles by Kyle Overstreet and Reed put runners at first and second with one out, but Zambrano retired the next two batters. In the ninth, Hudson Potts and Reed singled to put runner on the corners with two outs before Zambrano ended it.

The RockHounds open a four-game series against Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Thursday at Security Bank Ballpark.
