MIDLAND Corpus Christi’s Seth Beer and Stephen Wrenn both drove in two runs Thursday and the Hooks rode a fast start to a 6-5 victory over the Midland RockHounds in the opener of their Texas League series at Security Bank Ballpark.

The start of the game was delayed an hour and 53 minutes as a thunderstorm moved through the area. The Hooks wasted no time getting going once the weather cleared, scoring four runs in the top of the first and held on as the RockHounds came back.

Midland’s Chase Calabuig was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and the RockHounds had the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Corpus Christi’s Carson LaRue (2-4) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings to get the win. Carlos Sanabria pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Midland starter Kyle Friedrichs (3-5) was charged with five runs on 10 hits in five innings. Friedrichs bounced back from a rough first inning to hold the Hooks to a run over his last four innings, finishing with six strikeouts.

Bryan De La Cruz, who was 2 for 3, led off the game with a triple and scored on Abraham Toro’s groundout. With two outs, Granden Goetzman singled in a run and Wrenn tripled in two more to put the Hooks in control.

Midland got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Dairon Blanco led off with a triple and Calabuig followed with a sacrifice fly. The duo combined again in the third when Blanco drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on Calabuig’s single to left.

Beer, who was 2 for 4, singled in a run in the fourth and led off the sixth with a home run off Midland reliever A.J. Puk. Puk, who was making his fourth appearance with Midland and seventh of the season in his return from Tommy John surgery, struck out the next three batters and finished with four in a two-inning stint.

Kevin Merrell had an RBI double in the seventh and Calabuig connected for his third home run in the eighth, a two-run shot off Chad Donato to wrap up the scoring.

Taylor Motter, who was 2 for 4, followed with a single and Merrell worked a one-out walk in the ninth, but the RockHounds were unable to get the needed hits the rest of the way.

J.J. Matijevic and Goetzman both went 2 for 5 for the Hooks and Wrenn finished 2 for 4.

The series continues at 7 p.m. Friday at Security Bank Ballpark.
