AMARILLO Greg Deichmann made the game-saving defensive play in the ninth inning and added a clinching home run in the 10th Monday as the Midland RockHounds defeated Amarillo 9-4 in the opener of their Texas League series at Hodgetown.

For the second game in a row, the RockHounds took a lead in extra innings. This time, they were able to finish it off.

After Sunday’s series finale at Frisco was suspended in the top of the 11th inning with Midland leading 4-1 and batting with the bases loaded, the RockHounds made a five-run 10th inning hold up on Monday.

The game was the home opener for Amarillo, which rejoined the Texas League this season after a 37-year hiatus.

Midland overcame three Amarillo home runs, including a solo blast by Jorge Ona in the sixth that tied the game at 4. With one out in the ninth, Deichmann threw out pinch runner Chris Baker at the plate attempting to score on Peter Van Gansen’s single to right and John Gorman (1-0) got Owen Miller to ground out to end the inning.

In the 10th, Midland’s Luis Barrera singled in the go-ahead run, Anthony Miller followed with an RBI double, Dairon Blanco had a run-scoring groundout and Deichmann capped the outburst with a two-run homer. Kyle Finnegan then struck out the side on 14 pitches in the bottom of the inning to close it out.

Deichmann, who drove in three runs, and Jonah Heim, who had a two-run homer in the fourth, both finished 3 for 5 for Midland. Nate Mondou and Mikey White each went 3 for 4 with a double.

Gorman worked two scoreless innings in relief for the win, striking out three and walking two.

David Bednar (0-2) pitched the 10th to take the loss for Amarillo.
