CORPUS CHRISTI The Corpus Christi Hooks used another strong performance from a starting pitcher and offensive production Saturday to beat the Midland RockHounds 10-0 in Texas League action at Whataburger Field.

Corpus Christi’s Chad Donato took a no-hitter into the fifth in his first start with the Hooks and combined with Leovanny Rodriguez on a four-hit shutout. Donato (1-0) struck out 10 while allowing two hits and two walks over 6.2 innings.

In the three games of the series, Corpus Christi starters have allowed one run on two hits while striking out 32 over 17.2 innings. Midland, which still holds a three-game lead in the South Division, has not had a hit before the sixth inning in any of the three games.

Donato allowed just one baserunner — a leadoff walk to Taylor Motter in the second — before Kevin Merrell broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the sixth.

Midland’s best scoring chance came in the seventh, when Nate Mondou worked a two-out walk and Edwin Diaz followed with a double to end Donato’s night. Rodriguez, who gave up two hits and struck out three over 2.1 innings, came on to strike out Brallan Perez to end the inning.

Midland starter Kyle Friedrichs (3-4) was charged with six runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings.

The Hooks took the lead for good on Seth Beer’s RBI single in the third. Anibal Sierra, who was 3 for 4, doubled in a run in the fourth and added a two-run single in the sixth. Abraham Toro, who was 4 for 5, added an RBI single in the sixth.

Colton Shaver capped the night with a grand slam off Midland reliever Charles Hall in the eighth. Hall was making his first appearance with the RockHounds after being assigned from Arizona earlier in the day.

Chase Calabuig and Mondou each had a hit for Midland, which has struck out 41 times in the series.

Corpus Christi’s J.J. Matijevic went 2 for 5 and Lorenzo Quintana went 2 for 4. Each had a double.

The teams wrap up the four-game series at 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
