The West Texas Rumbleweeds’ inaugural season came to an end with a 7-6 loss to the Falls Town Flyers FC, Saturday at Ector County Coliseum.

Playing in the semifinals of the US Arena Pro Soccer League playoffs, the Rumbleweeds’ saw their early 2-0 lead evaporate as both teams battled back and forth throughout the game.

Trailing by a goal with under five minutes left, the Flyers tied things up with a goal by Anthony Powell with 4:34 left in the game.

With 2:26 remaining on the clock, Josh Peloquin delivered the winning goal for Wichita Falls and sent his team to league championship next week in Amarillo.

“Honestly, for the first time doing this, it’s great,” Wichita Falls head coach and player Robert Swann said. “We can say that the Wichita community is going to be proud of us. We’re proud of the fight we had. The first ever championship in this league itself is going to have Wichita Falls and we’re proud of that. That alone speaks volumes.”

A goal by Jorge Carmona gave the Rumbleweeds the 1-0 lead with 10:56 left in the first quarter. It was a minute later when West Texas doubled its lead with a goal by Roberto Perez and the Rumbleweeds held on to its two-goal advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Jose Cibrian nearly made it 3-0 with his shot in front of the goal but his strike was saved by Wichita Falls’ goalkeeper Carlos Gonzalez.

About a minute later, the Rumbleweeds were made to pay for their missed opportunity as Wichita Falls got on the board from a goal by Albert Rodriguez with 11 minutes left before the half.

Swann equalized with 9:01 in the second quarter.

Christian Okeke made it 3-2 for Wichita Falls with 5:54 left before halftime.

David Freeland then tied it up for the Rumbleweeds with his header less than a minute later.

Wichita Falls responded with a goal by Chase Robertson to put his team back up.

But Perez tied it up for the Rumbleweeds and both teams were even at the half.

“It’s rough on my heart,” West Texas head coach Danny Lopez said. “It’s rough on my nerves. It’s the highs and lows. It was indicative of this season. We succeeded at times and fell short at others. It was a good game and I would’ve loved a win but we still played well.”
