Things went swimmingly last weekend for one local soccer team as the best on the beach.

The Odessa Sharks U10 team took home the title at the Express Beach Soccer Fest June 29-30 at McGee Beach in Corpus Christi after finishing 3-1 over the two-day tournament.

For head coach J.D. Melton, competing in the tournament was simply about finding something different.

“We were just looking for something different than just a regular tournament,” Melton said. “I actually saw a YouTube video of people playing beach soccer in California and thought that would be neat to do. I asked the rec team that I coach who would like to go and they were all up for it.”

The team consisted of players from both the Sharks and Shooting Stars Club team in Odessa — Jessalyn Melendez, Sophie Salcido, Gracie Salcido, Misha Herrera, Kylie McCollum and Gabby Murrillo.

This is the second straight year that. Melton had taken his team down to the beach to compete. He said that everyone gets a lot out of it aside from wins and losses.

“It’s definitely a great experience for the kids,” Melton said. “They’re playing in the sand and getting outside and we just went down there and had a lot of fun.”

The Sharks also had to contend with a larger field of teams this time around. The team finished in second place out of five teams last year compared to 14 teams in the 2019 field.

The Sharks got off to a good start in its first two games, defeating the Shark Attack from Burleson and the Sand Storm from Corpus Christi.

The third game proved to be a bit more of a challenge as the Sharks fell to Quest FC out of Stephenville. That left both teams tied at the top of the standings.

Both teams played once more to break the tie and the Sharks were able to get the upper hand this time around as goals from Melendez and Herrera were enough to defeat Quest FC to win first place.

Melendez scored three goals over the weekend, Roedel scored twice and both Sophie and Gracie Salcido scored a goal as well.

After the success of the team each of the last two years, Melton hopes to continue to make the trip an annual thing.

“Winning a title is exciting, but I just let the girls have fun,” Melton said. “It’s a rewarding experience that just makes everyone feel good inside.”
