MIDLAND The RockHounds needed only two outs.

Instead, they surrendered five runs.

Entering the ninth inning with a one-run lead, Midland watched Amarillo score five runs in a 7-5

Amarillo took advantage of Midland’s meltdown in its 7-5 win in Texas League action Tuesday night at Security Bank Ballpark.

“It’s a tough one to lose when you have a lead in the ninth, even when it’s only a one-run lead, it’s still tough,” RockHounds manager Scott Steinmann said. “We just couldn’t close it out.”

The Sod Poodles’ rally began when Rodrigo Orozco worked a leadoff walk to get on base.

Ivan Castillo then flied out to center before Edward Olivares, doubled to center field, scoring Orozco to tie the game.

Owen Miller then singled on a ground ball to right field, scoring Olivares for Amarillo’s first lead of the night.

A wild pitch allowed Miller to advance to second before Luis Torrens was walked, bringing Steinmann to the mound to make a pitching change as Angel Duno took over on the mound for the RockHounds.

Peter Van Gansen singled to Miller and Torrens to score.

Midland fell to 45-43 overall (11-8 in the second half of the season) while Amarillo moved to 43-44, 9-10.

Midland got on the scoreboard first when Dairon Blanco doubled to left field on a sharp fly ball in the bottom of the first inning was followed up by Chase Calabuig’s sacrifice fly ball, advancing Blanco to scoring position.

Mikey White then doubled to bring in Blanco.

Tyler Ramirez added to Midland’s early lead with a double on a ground ball to left field, scoring White on the RBI for a 2-0 advantage.

But after the RockHounds’ fast start, their bats soon went quiet as Amarillo calmed down and held Midland scoreless for three consecutive innings.
