The Odessa Jackalopes shut out the Lone Star Brahmas 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Ector County Coliseum to sweep this week’s two-game series.

Kyle Herbster had two goals, while Patrick Dawson and Connor Smith each had one as the Jackalopes, who won the opening game of the series 6-3 on Friday, scored one goal each in the first and second periods before adding two in the third.

Odessa improved to 11-11-1 for the season, while Lone Star fell to 11-10-4.

Odessa outshot the Brahmas 32-24.

“I thought our defense was outstanding tonight,” said Odessa coach Greg Gatto. “They pushed the puck up and we wanted to be quick. That was our whole thing this week. We wanted to play fast and I thought our defense did a good job in the neutral zone. We had some chances and missed some, but we’ll take it.”

Odessa’s Alex Camarre got the shutout, starting in the net and finishing with 20 saves.

Harrison Feeney was the starting goalie for the Brahmas, finishing with 25 saves for the night.

“We had Alex come in and he played outstanding,” Gatto said. “On power plays, I thought we were pretty good. We were able shut them down.”

After Odessa's Rex Moe was sent to the penalty box for high sticking with nine minutes to go in the first period, Lone Star's Blake Evennou fired a dangerous shot but was denied by Camarre.

The Jackalopes then quickly went on the attack as Herbster scored a short-handed goal less than a minute later to give Odessa a 1-0 lead with 5:32 left in the opening period. Zach Heintz and James Crossman each were credited with an assist on the score.

Herbster’s opening goal led to a couple of scoring opportunities for the Jackalopes, but they couldn’t double their lead before the first period horn blew.

The Jackalopes had 10 shots for the first period, while Lone Star had nine.

While Odessa couldn’t extend its lead before the first intermission, the Jackalopes made up for it at the start of the second period, scoring on Dawson’s goal just 40 seconds into the period for the 2-0 lead with an assist from Herbster.

Both teams then went quiet for most of the second period.

The Jackalopes’ Ricky Boysen was penalized for holding with eight minutes remaining in the second period. Less than a minute later, Lone Star’s Matt Guerra was penalized for a head contact. Jakub Sirota and Noah Roofe both picked up penalties in the same minute (Sirota for high sticking and Roofe for slashing), but Odessa couldn’t capitalize on the 4-on-3 power play.

The Brahmas managed to hold off a series of attacks from the Jackalopes and Odessa went into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Lone Star couldn’t muster many chances in the second period, finishing the frame with only three shots. The Jackalopes had 15 shots in the second period.

With 16 minutes left in the game, Herbster’s goal on a power play, with an assist by Jared Christy gave, Odessa a 3-0 lead.

The Jackalopes didn’t take their foot off the gas pedal as Smith added a fourth goal for Odessa with help by Herbster on a power play with 12:08 remaining.
