The Odessa High Lady Bronchos’ playoff hopes took a hit in the form of a 3-1 loss to the Wolfforth Frenship Lady Tigers on Tuesday night at Ratliff Stadium.

Playing in windy conditions in the penultimate district game, the Lady Tigers (17-2-2, overall, 9-0-0 in District 2-6A), who had already clinched the 2-6A title, remained undefeated in district play. The Lady Bronchos fell to 8-9-3, 3-4-2 and remain in fourth place with 16 points.

Fifth place Midland Lee (6-10-3, 3-5-1) is on Odessa High’s tail with 14 points and the teams will face each other in next week’s district finale at Grande Communications Stadium.

“Really and truly, we did a few things that we worked on the other day,” Frenship head coach Gery Joy said. “I was happy for the girls for trying to learn through it because this is a process of where we’re at right now. We’re trying to prepare for games and it was the little things that we wanted to see and the girls reacted the way we needed them to.”

The Lady Bronchos began the game on a promising note, creating a few scoring chances in the early minutes of the game and had a few close shots but couldn’t break through.

The Lady Tigers eventually took control of possession and with 23 minutes left in the first half, Natalie Jones scored the first of her two goals for the night to give Frenship a 1-0 lead.

It was only four minutes later when Jones capitalized again, scoring from the right side of the box on close range to double her team’s lead.

The Lady Tigers nearly tripled their lead just minutes into the second half when Brogan Ross’ shot from close range was saved by Bayleah Garcia.

It wasn’t until seven minutes into the half when Frenship did make it 3-0, scoring off Alli Holder’s shot from long range.

Ross almost scored again with her shot that deflected off the right post with 26 minutes left in the game.

The Lady Bronchos eventually got on the scoreboard with a goal by Jamie Natividad with 10:16 remaining to make it a two-goal game.

“I think we played well for all 80 minutes,” Odessa High head coach Cecilia Kellar said. “The biggest difference was taking advantage of opportunities. If we took advantage of the opportunities in the first half that we had in front of the goal, then maybe it’s a different game and a different situation. But I was proud of the way our girls played. I thought we played smart and played good possession and we created good opportunities for us.”
