At the start of the season, Odessa High’s JC Ramirez set a goal of qualifying for the Area 1/2 meet.

Now that he has reached that benchmark, he wants more.

The junior triple jumper will get a chance to qualify for the Class 6A Region I Championships when he competes at the area meet today at Frenship High School in Wolfforth.

“Going into this season, my goal was to win district and get in the top two at area and then get out of regionals,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez won the District 2-6A meet in the triple jump, posting a jump of 44 feet, 7 inches, beating Amarillo Tascosa’s Daemian Gray who finished second with a jump of 44-3.

It was Ramirez’s best jump in the triple jump in his high school career.

“I was really pleased with my performance at district,” Ramirez said. “I set a personal record at that meet and hope to do the same at area.”

It’s the first time that Ramirez has qualified for the area meet in the triple jump.

“It means a lot to me,” Ramirez said. “The goal is state, obviously, but I’m pleased with how I did in district and I’m excited to see what I can do at area.”

With the track and field season now in its championship portion throughout the state, Ramirez feels like he’s starting to hit his stride but thinks there’s more to show.

“I feel like I’m getting closer,” Ramirez said. “I don’t think I’ve peaked yet but I’m hoping to get there soon. I’ve been working hard and I’m seeing where I can get with it.”

The training for him this week has been adjusted for Thursday’s meet.

“Training this week started off with hard work on Monday before cooling off on Tuesday so our legs don’t fall off and that’s about it,” Ramirez said. “I just want to go out and do the best that I can and do well.”

His jumping coach, Ammad Quigley, has been proud of his work.

“He’s doing well,” Quigley said. “He’s doing what he’s supposed to do. I know he has the potential to do well. He’s just a great kid and wants to get better.

“He takes things seriously and he knows my goal is to get the best out of him.
