It took most of the season, but the Midland High girls cross country team finally got to the finish line first, winning the team title at the Odessa Invitational with 44 points Thursday at UTPB Park.

The first victory of the season for the Lady Dawgs came in the final tuneup before the District 2-6A Championships next week in Amarillo.

Odessa High was second with 57 point, followed by Permian (81), Lubbock-Cooper (82), Midland Lee (101) and Lubbock High (149).

After watching her team run in high temperatures in the Class 5A-6A race over the three-mile course, Midland High head coach Desiree Stephenson praised her team’s effort.

“It’s kind of hot for October,” Stephen said. “We ran a good team race. Time-wise, it doesn’t reflect our best times of the year. Our girls felt a little let down by that but it was our first team win for us this year.”

Niamaya Cisnero’s finished second in 21 minutes, 24.72 seconds to pace the Lady Dawgs. Shelby Schmidt was sixth in a time of 21:54.88, Kandus Box was ninth in 22:09.62 and Lily Chamberlain came in 11th in a time of 22:09.66.

“We knew going in that Odessa was going to be tough to beat,” Stephenson said. “But I’m proud of the team win. If you look at the race, all the times were slow but considering the heat, we did our best and I think district will be a different story next week. I was impressed.”

Lubbock Cooper’s Cammy Jenkins was the individual winner in a time of 20:17.69.

“I came into this race mentally prepared,” Jenkins said. “I knew it was going to be hard. It’s hot every year. The course is also tough. There’s a lot of competition but I was able to keep a strong mindset.”

Nathalia Escontrias was the leading runner for the Lady Bronchos, finishing third in a time of 21:45.28. Her teammate Odalis Lujan was right behind her in fourth at 21:45.78.

“As a coach, I’m not pleased with the results because we should’ve won that race but we used this race to prepare for the district meet,” Odessa High girls cross country coach Tracey Borchardt said. “Now we know who and what we need to prepare for next week’s district race.”

The Presidio Blue Devils dominated the event, finishing first with a total of 34 points over the 2-mile course.

“I just told the team that it was the final tune up before the district race next week,” said Presidio head coach Alonzo Samaniego. “We come to this meet because there are a lot of great competition for girls running and our girls did well today.”

Crane finished second with a total of 50 points while Fort Stockton took third with 108. Midland Christian (109), Greenwood (120) and Wink (147) rounded out the top six.

“We found out a lot of stuff that we need to work on before district and regionals,” Samaniego said. “We need to do some speed work.”

Midland Christian’s McCarly Holloman won the race with a time of 13:16.84.

“It was a tough race,” Holloman said. “I was about to catch them on the final set. I just kept telling myself that I can do it with Christ’s help.”

Ivett Ramos led Presidio, finishing second with a time of 13:21.94 while Crane’s Railey Rodriguez was third in 13:32.50. Crystal Barriga of Presidio was fourth in a time of 13:41.53, with Maci Garrett of Wink was fifth in 14:02.84.
