MIDLAND Opportunities came and went for the Midland RockHounds but there was only so much they could do as they fell 1-0 to the Corpus Christi Hooks Friday night at Security Bank Ballpark.

A Granden Goetzman sacrifice fly to score Abraham Toro in the top of the second inning was all the Hooks (20-20 overall) needed in their win, finishing the night with six hits and one error.

The RockHounds (20-20) finished with four hits and no errors.

Gabriel Valdez took the win on the mound for the Hooks while Midland’s Daulton Jefferies was the losing pitcher.

“We had opportunities that we let go past but I liked the way the guys played,” RockHounds manager Scott Steinmann said. “They played hard and they want to win. they’re in the game. At this level, it’s all about the development and how they compete. I thought we did a great job tonight.”

It was a back and forth battle as neither team could get much going offensively.

The Hooks had a chance to build the lead in the top of the fifth off a one-out single from Carmen Benedetti but Osvaldo Duarte grounded into a double play and the RockHounds got out of the tight spot.

Midland had its chance in the bottom of the frame as Luis Barrera reached on a single and would eventually make his way to third base off after Greg Deichmann reached first on a throwing error.

Jonah Heim’s pop out to center fielder Ronnie Dawson ended the inning, however, as the RockHounds came away empty.

The top of the sixth inning ended just like the fifth inning. Following consecutive singles from Stephen Wrenn and Toro, Midland turned another inning-ending double play off a Seth Beer groundball to end the threat.

The next best chance for the RockHounds came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Edwin Diaz doubled and later moved to third on a fly out from Barrera.

After a two-out walk to Mikey White to put runners on the corners, Deichmann was unable to bring the runners home as he lined out sharply to end the inning.

“We had great defensive plays,” Steinmann said. “Their center fielder made a few good plays. Our pitchers did a great job out there tonight. They gave us a chance.”

After getting out of the top of the ninth inning unscathed, Midland had one last chance to close the gap.

However, the RockHounds went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
