The Odessa High girls basketball team entered Friday’s Class 6A area round game facing a tall challenge against Arlington Martin.

The Lady Bronchos were up for the challenge, but in the end couldn’t keep pace, falling 43-25 to the Lady Warriors at Abilene High’s Eagle Gym.

Arlington Martin will face North Richland Hills in the regional quarterfinal round, while Odessa High ends the season at 19-16. Richland advanced with a 53-51 victory over District 2-6A champion Wolfforth Frenship.

“Arlington Martin’s size really gave us a lot of problems tonight,” Odessa High head coach Olivia Pyburn said. “They were also really quick and athletic and that’s a credit to how good they are as a team.”

Scoring was hard to come by on as both teams tried to find a rhythm offensive while trying to rush the other side.

Martin found it early, scoring the first six points of the game.

The first field goal for Odessa High came with under three minutes remaining from Roxana Jimenez to make it 6-3.

However, even when the inside shots weren’t working, Martin used the outside shot to extend the lead.

Autumn Smith and Mariah Roberts both hit 3-pointers to push the lead to 12-3 and the Lady Warriors took a 12-4 lead into the second quarter.

Smith led Martin with 12 points, Lauren Shaw added 11 and Smith had nine points to lead the offense.

“I just wanted our girls to settle in early on,” Martin head coach Brooke Brittain said. “I think we were rushed a little bit early, but the outside shots definitely helped out.

“Credit to Odessa High’s defense because they played with a lot of energy and definitely made us uncomfortable early on.”

The Lady Warriors were able to create some separation as they went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter.

Odessa High battled back, but was simply not able to get the ball in the basket, scoring just four points in the second quarter.

Still, down 21-10, the Bronchos were in the game at halftime.

The third quarter got off to a promising start for the Lady Bronchos as Skylar Herrera scored two of her team-high nine points on the first possession of the second half.

That was as close as Odessa High got the rest of the way.

Martin had its own challenges offensively, but it was the defense that helped keep the Lady Bronchos in check as the Lady Warriors built a 30-17 leading heading into the final eight minutes.

Martin was able to salt the game away in the fourth quarter from the free throw line, scoring the first nine points of the quarter from the charity stripe, and led by as much as 20 points.

As was the case all season long, Odessa High fought until the end and even got a boost late when senior guard Abigail Rodriguez returned to the court and hit two 3-pointers to close out her high school career.

It was a disappointing end, but one that left plenty of optimism for the future.

“My young ladies played their hearts out tonight,” Pyburn said. “Even though we were a little bit outmatched, they still battled and kept fighting. I told them in the locker room that I’ve never been prouder of a group because of the way they continued to compete and what they were able to accomplish this season.”
