LUBBOCK Permian’s Joshua Garcia continued his solid season by finishing 13th in the Class 6A boys race at the UIL Region I Cross Country Championships Monday at May Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Garcia, a junior, covered the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 23 seconds, qualifying for the UIL Cross Country State Championships on Nov. 3 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The top four teams and Top 10 individuals not on a winning team earned their tickets to the state meet.

In Class 4A, that means the Andrews girls and boys teams will be running for a crown.

The Mustangs captured the boys title with 63 points, just ahead of Canyon (78) and San Elizario (87).

Jasson Marquez finished third in 16:07.30 and Derek Hernandez was ninth in 16:19.60 to pace Andrews’ winning effort, with Derik Lujan (16:24.80) finishing just out of the Top 10 in 11th.

The Lady Mustangs finished fourth on the day with 121 points. Canyon (33), Decatur (94) and Hereford (102) took the top the spots on the podium.

Elizabeth Garcia led Andrews with an eighth-place showing in 12:04.10.

Samantha Jasso (20th, 12:37.20), Grace Shaffer (23rd, 12:45.40), Paige Ortiz (25th, 12:46.2) and Avery Joiner (46th, 13:16.90) were the other scoring runners for the Lady Mustangs.

In the Class 3A boys race, Crane finished third with a score of 94 points, with Boyd (89) and Tornillo (91) just in front of the Golden Cranes.

Individually, Alpine’s D’Angelo Gonzales finished 11th in 16:47.7 to earn one of the region’s individual berths.

Kiara Hodge of Iraan and Maci Garrett of Wink both raced their way into the Class 2A girls state competition. Hodge finished ninth in 12:33.10, while Garrett was 11th in 12:35.20 over a two-mile course.

In the Class 2A boys race, Clint Maurer of Iraan finished 14th overall in 17:30.40, to advance to the state championships.
