There was no need for a fourth quarter rally this time around for the Permian girls basketball team as it pulled away late for a 35-28 victory against Odessa High Tuesday at the Odessa High Fieldhouse.

The win puts Permian (12-18 overall, 2-6 district), Odessa High and Midland High in a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 2-6A. Midland High fell to Midland Lee on Tuesday night to create the deadlock.

“We just came out with a lot more focus and energy tonight,” Permian head coach Angela Braziel-Smith said. “The last time we matched up with Odessa High, I thought we got a little bit out of our character.

“We were under control and more composed and everything just came together.”

That energy was sparked from the low post where the Lady Panthers used their size to their advantage on the boards and limited Odessa High (17-14, 2-6) on offense.

Sophomore forward Ashton Garner led Permian with 11 points while Daysia Christian had 10. Senior forward Alena Madero added eight for the Lady Panthers.

“We just weren’t clicking at all tonight,” Odessa High head coach Olivia Pyburn said. “We just had a lot of letdowns and we didn’t execute.

“We got outrebounded on both ends of the floor and we just ended up playing catchup the whole night.”

Permian got off to a quick start early, scoring the game’s first six points in a little more than two minutes with two baskets from Christian and one from Madero.

Odessa High answered with a 6-0 run of its own as the Lady Bronchos held a 10-8 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Skylar Herrera would make the final basket in that run for Odessa High and finished as the game’s leading scorer with 12 points.

The second quarter saw the Lady Panthers start off on another 6-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. Those would be the only field goals of the half for Permian as Odessa High cut the deficit to 15-14 at the break.

The third quarter saw the teams go back and forth with Odessa High taking an 18-15 lead before both teams ran off a 6-0 run each to make it 24-21 Lady Bronchos late in the third quarter.

Permian would have the last say in the third quarter, scoring six unanswered points capped off by a jump shot from Garner to give the Lady Panthers a 27-24 lead entering the fourth quarter.

That’s when Permian was able to create some distance as Garner capped off her run of seven straight points with a 3-pointer to put the Panthers up seven with under six minutes remaining.

A layup from Christian put the Lady Panthers up 34-25 with less than four minutes remaining to help seal the win.

“It felt good to get this win,” Garner said. “We were able to put everything together and we were able to stay positive throughout the whole game.”

With the race now set at three teams for one playoff spot, Friday should some clarity as to which team has the best chance of reaching the postseason.

Odessa High travels to Midland High on Friday, while Permian hosts Wolfforth Frenship.

“We just have to keep fighting,” Braziel-Smith said. “This win gives us something to look forward to still and we just have to keep pressing.”

“We can’t sit and dwell on this game,” Pyburn said. “We have another tough game on Friday and we just have to get back at it starting Wednesday morning.”
