ABILENE For the first 20 minutes, the Odessa High girls soccer team looked to be in control of its Class 6A area-round playoff match against Arlington High.

But as well as the Lady Bronchos started, they weren’t able to find the ending they were hoping for.

A pair of first-half goals proved to be the difference as the Lady Colts defeated the Lady Bronchos, 2-0, Tuesday at Shotwell Stadium.

Arlington High (18-2-3) awaits the winner of the San Angelo Central-Permian game in the regional quarterfinals.

“I thought that we played well today,” Odessa High head coach Cecilia Kellar said. “We did some good things and created a lot of good opportunities.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky on some chances and didn’t execute on others but sometimes that’s the difference in a game like this.”

Odessa High (11-9-3 overall) was able to withstand early pressure from the Lady Colts, who were able to maintain possession.

One of the best chances for the Lady Bronchos came during the 22nd minute as a cross from Kimberly Santos found the right foot of Yareli Barrera.

Arlington High goalkeeper Hannah Falks was in the right spot for the save, however, and moments later, the Lady Colts got their first break of the game.

After pushing the ball forward on a counterattack, a collision in the box between Odessa High goalkeeper Catalina Ulate and Arlington High forward Tracy Chau left an open net for Bre’ana Robledo to head the ball in for the first goal of the game in the 26th minute.

The Lady Colts were able to get the second goal with less than five minutes to go in the first half as Caroline Pool converted a penalty kick to give her team a 2-0 advantage.

“The first goal definitely settled us down a little bit,” Arlington High head coach Andrea Scott said. “I thought we played really well in the first half and we were able to take advantage of our chances.”

The Lady Bronchos were able to regroup at halftime and tried to swing the momentum back to their side early in the second half.

The Arlington High defense responded to the pressure, standing tall and making key stops to keep the shutout, and the victory, intact.

“I thought we showed a lot of heart as a team,” Odessa High senior Sierra Vigil said. “We just didn’t finish like we needed to.

“Still, I’m proud of my girls for how far they’ve come this season. I want them to use this as motivation to try and get past the second round next year.”

“Odessa High is a well put-together team and that was something we knew coming in,” Scott said. “We knew we had to play well defensively in the second half against a really good offense and I’m just really proud of how our girls played on both sides.”

While the Lady Bronchos saw their season end, Kellar believes that her team can use the result to build for next season.

“It’s been a good season for us,” Kellar said. “Our senior class has done a good job of stepping up and our team did a good job of overcoming adversity. It can be tough when you feel like you could have come out on the other end.

“It just came down to a few plays and times where we didn’t execute. But, we’ll learn from this and get ready to move ahead next year.”
