Both the Marfa and Sanderson football teams have canceled this week’s games on the recommendation of the University Interscholastic League following an incident between the teams during Friday’s game in Marfa.

In the third quarter, players from both teams became involved in an altercation, which ended with a Marfa player being transported to Big Bend Regional Medical Center and Sanderson head coach David Donnell being arrested and charged with Class A misdemeanor assault.

Donnell, in his first year at Sanderson, posted bond Friday evening and was released.

Marfa was scheduled to travel to face Nueces Canyon, while Sanderson was set to face the Garden City JV at Balmorhea.

Marfa next will play Sept. 21 at Grandfalls-Royalty.
