GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Odessa High races to District 2-6A crown

AMARILLO The Odessa High girls cross country team started the postseason on the right foot, running away to the District 2-6A title Thursday at Thompson Park in Amarillo.

The Lady Bronchos finished with 24 points to easily outdistance Midland High (48) and Permian (88).

The top three teams, along with the top 10 individuals, advanced to the Region I-6A Championships on Oct. 22 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Odessa High’s Nathalia Escontrias won the three-mile event in a time of 20 minutes, 46.54 seconds. Teammates Odalis Lujan (21:26.60), Mariana Murrillo (21:29.20) and Kayla Mendoza (21:29.26) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, to help the Lady Bronchos race away to the team crown.

Kaitlyn Hernandez of Permian finished eighth in 21:47.53.
