Athletes from the Permian Basin, South Plains and Panhandle made their way to Ratliff Stadium Thursday for the beginning of the District 2-6A track meet.

And on the opening day of the meet, a number of field athletes were able to take center stage as the top four finishers in each final event qualified for the area meet with District 1-6A on April 18 in Wolfforth.

Permian’s Rakeeb Adeyemi took first place in the long jump, finishing with a best jump of 22 feet, 7.5 inches. He edged out Daemian Gray of Amarillo Tascosa by six inches to take the top spot. Jaydyn Scott-King of Midland Lee and Preston Brockington of Midland High finished third and fourth, respectively, as the other area qualifiers.

There were also a couple of long distance races that determined area qualifiers. In the boys 3,200-meter race, Permian’s Joshua Garcia held off Odessa High’s Adrian Lujan with a time of 9:56.22 to move on to the area meet.

“I just wanted to focus on winning,” Garcia said after the race. “Adrian stuck with me pretty much the whole way and it was good competition. He really helped me push through that last lap.”

The girls 3,200 was contested late Thursday after the conclusion of the running preliminaries. The race originally started as scheduled, but was stopped on the third lap because of a timing malfunction.

The meet continues Friday with the boys triple jump and girls long jump starting at 12:30 p.m. The running finals get underway starting at 3:30 with the girls and boys 400 relay and concluding with the 1,600 meter relay.

Among the Permian qualifiers Thursday was Mia Black, who finished second in the girls shot put with a top throw of 40 feet, 8.5 inches to qualify. Jake Parchman finished third place in the boys discus (142-3.5) to qualify as well.

Finally, Permian’s Kei’ausha Williams and Odessa High’s Gaby Jaquez finished second and third, respectively, in the girls high jump to both earn spots in the area meet. Williams cleared 5 feet and Jaquez jumped 4-10.
